Root Canal Therapy

When soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue is damaged or infected, root canal therapy is the safe and effective way of saving the tooth.

The most common causes of pulpal nerve damage are:

  • Deep decay
  • Deep Fillings
  • Trauma

The most common symptoms of pulpal damage are

  • Pain in the tooth when biting
  • Pain while chewing
  • Oversensitivity to hot and cold food or drinks
  • Facial swelling
  • There may be no symptoms at all.

Without treatment, the infection of the dental pulp will spread to the bone and surrounding tissues and may lead to loss of tooth and or systemic problem.

Root canal therapy is performed by first making an opening at the top of the tooth. The infected pulp is removed and the canals where the pulp once was are cleaned and shaped. The canals are then sealed to prevent further contamination. Finally the access area is filled and a crown is placed on the tooth to prevent fracture and to complete the restoration of the tooth.
